Siam races across the narrow rope suspended 60 feet in the air with the poise of a ballerina and the balance of a circus acrobat. It seems that the adventurous gibbon will take any opportunity to show off even though she could just take the bridge’s footpath. A very charming video uploaded on Barcroft TV shows the lar gibbon’s rather novel way of making her way across a rope bridge suspended high above. The video was captured at Monkey land in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. As she teeters precariously on the rope’s edge, Siam is seen using her arms to balance. But as she darts across the bridge at an incredible speed, the 8 year old seems unfazed.
However fairly soon, the adorable animal gets bored with her game. Instead she stops halfway across the bridge and sits down on the rope and gives the camera a cheeky glance. The gibbon was brought to Monkey land a year ago after being bred in captivity. Lar gibbons are commonly known as white handed gibbons. They are found in forests in Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. The breed is thought to have become extinct in China. Though it eats leaves, insects and flowers, it’s diet is made up mostly of fruit. Using their long arms to swing from branch to branch, the primates rarely come down to ground level. But when they do walk they do so with their arms raised above their head for balance.
